Today it is exactly 52 years ago that Queen Máxima was born in the bustling Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. She received flowers from SBS 6 yesterday, but acted ‘very cool’.
It is May 17, 1971 when Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti sees the light of day. At that time, no one in her family could have imagined that as an adult woman she would become the queen of a European country. Yet she became one because she fell in love with – at the time – Prince Willem-Alexander, whom she found to be a warm, humorous and passionate man.

Máxima will not be seen in public today and that is why she received a bunch of flowers yesterday from a reporter from Show news. “Your Majesty, may I congratulate you on your birthday tomorrow on behalf of Shownieuws?” asks this royalty fan.
The queen then says: “Thank you very much, thank you very much. Well, one day early, but yes: tomorrow is indeed my birthday.”
The reporter: “I wanted to say: we won’t see you tomorrow. Are you going to celebrate a little bit?”
Máxima: “Ehm, yes, very small. I hope another time with more friends, but very small tomorrow.”
The reporter: “Enjoy it!”
‘Very cool’
Shownieuws presenter Dyantha Brooks notices that Máxima reacts a bit sparingly. “Evert, you say: ‘It’s so nice of us’… I don’t know about it, but in different cultures it brings bad luck, doesn’t it, to congratulate someone a day in advance. Máxima was also a bit cool.”
Palace watcher Sandra Schuurhof agrees. “Yes, you noticed that a bit, didn’t you, like: ‘It’s only tomorrow.’ Like, I have to get it first. I noticed that last time when she turned 50. Then I had also congratulated the day before and then she was also like: yes, well, that’s only tomorrow, isn’t it?”
‘Don’t jinx it’
Sandra has the idea that Máxima is a bit superstitious in this area. “I do believe she has a lot to do with that, from: don’t jinx it.”
Some people do not want to be congratulated on the day before their birthday because they fear that bad luck will be attracted by talking with obviousness about something that is yet to happen.
