Birth rates fell by almost 3 percent in 2020, especially in Brussels and Wallonia

The number of births in Belgium decreased by 2.9 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. The decrease occurred in all three regions, but is more remarkable in Brussels (-6 percent) and Wallonia (-3.9 percent) than in Flanders (-1.5 percent). This is reported by Statbel, which examined the birth rates from 2019 to 2021. Possible explanation: due to the corona crisis, people postponed their wish to have children for a while.
