Bird flu has been established just across the border with Germany. A transport ban has been introduced in the 10 kilometers around the infected laying company in the town of Hoogstede. A small part of that limitation zone falls in the Netherlands, with one poultry farm at Nieuw-Schoonebeek.
The limitations also apply to that company. The transport ban means that no poultry and breeding and consumption eggs may be transported from locations with birds in this zone. There is also a ban on the removal of manure of birds and used litter, and for other animals and animal products from companies with birds.
Last month the disease was found in the Netherlands at a broiler company in Blija in the north of Friesland. It was the second time that bird flu was established somewhere in 2024. Since November 20, a national collection obligation has been applied, after an outbreak at a chicken farm in Putten.
The disease is spread by, among other things, migratory birds, so that the virus pops up all over the world. People can also die from the bird flu. Hundreds of people have succumbed to the disease worldwide.
