  • World Championship and European Championship medalist Magnus Kirt is Oliver Helander’s new coach, reports Yle.
  • Arto Bryggare is excited about the collaboration.
  • Bryggare believes that Kirt can raise Helander to challenge the medalists.

– I am very optimistic, Iltalehti’s athletics expert Arto Bryggare says.

Yle told on Monday, that the Finnish javelin thrower by Oliver Helander the new coach is Estonian Magnus Kirt. The ex-javelin is a World Championship silver medalist and European Championship bronze medalist.

Kirt hurt his shoulder badly in the 2019 World Cup final, where he won his silver. The Estonian still competed in 2022, but his career ended in that season.

Bryggare considers the cooperation between Helander and Kirti a good thing.

– This is very positive news for Oliver! As a former top thrower, Kirt knows the secrets of the sport perfectly. That’s a good equation.

– They are able to talk and spar with each other and discuss the pains that javelin throwers have. Helander finds that he is not alone. Kirt can certainly help him.

Kirt has coached at least a competitor in the women’s javelin throw in Estonia Gedly Support. In his career, the 24-year-old athlete has won European Championship bronze for under-18 and under-20, as well as European Championship silver for under-23.

Kirti’s own record is 90.61 meters.

To Tallinn

Helander has been coached before Mikael Kullberg, Glen Lignell, Tero Pitkämäki and Petteri Piiroinen. In September, however, it turned out that Piiroinen’s title would have been agreed to be advisor.

Helander lives with his girlfriend in Aarhus, Denmark. Piiroinen was supposed to follow his protégé’s training with a live connection, but the plan didn’t work. So Helander made his own training program and visited Piiroinen in Kuortane a few times.

Bryggare severely criticized the coaching relationship from the beginning. He is happy about Kirti’s washing.

– A move where a thrower like Oliver Helander doesn’t have a coach doesn’t work. Oliver is a top athlete physically. The javelin throwing technique requires a second pair of eyes.

According to Yle’s story, Helander plans to train for 1-2 weeks every month in Tallinn with Kirti. The EC medalist needs close coaching.

– This is clearly a leap in a better direction. And not a small one. Saying that Oliver wants to continue the javelin, Bryggare excitedly analyzes and continues:

– The others threw ten meters further than him. It saddens the elite athlete. It doesn’t feel good, the expert refers to the World Cup.

Helander qualified for the javelin World Cup final in Tokyo with a result of 79.75, while at least 82.81 would have been required to continue. The WC bronze came off with a result of 86.67 and the gold with 88.16. Helander’s own record was thrown 89.83 in the summer, so there is enough gunpowder in hand.

Bryggare believes that Tallinn visits are enough.

– You don’t even have to throw the javelin in practice many times a week.

Helander for medals?

Next season, in August, the European athletics championships are ahead, where Helander will defend the bronze medal he won in Rome. At the same time, javelin throwing is anything but a European sport, as the World Cup medals in Tokyo went to Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and the United States.

Huge stars are also from India Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan Arshad Nadeem. Bryggare believes in Helander’s chances to answer the shouts of the medalists.

– Oliver has good seams to challenge the heroes of the Caribbean in the next two years. Javelin throwing now has two big centers: around India and in the Caribbean.

The Olympics will be held in 2028.

Something has to be done

Iltalehti’s athletics expert Arto Bryggare believes that the Estonian Magnus Kirtin the world of thought can meet a Finnish one by Oliver Helander with. He brings out the greatness of the fighter Erki Noolinwho pilots Saga of Vanni.

A good connection between athlete-coach pairs is forming between Finland and Estonia. However, it does not necessarily flatter the state of domestic coaching.

In Bryggare’s opinion, Finnish coaching and especially individual coaching must be given immediate attention.

– It cannot go on like this, that the coaches have to tear up everything with their own money. If Finnish top sport wants to be closer to the top of the world than it is now, the conditions of coaches in Finland must be significantly improved.

– The coach’s work must be valued with money. Bread is not bought with trophies, but with money. There are also gaps among children and young people.
