Big fight between rabbits after dumping in Wormer: “Picks fly around”

At petting zoo ‘t Weidje in Wormer, volunteers made a strange discovery last week. Among the group of ‘cuddly rabbits’ kept in the stable were two strangers who had been dumped. A rash action, says manager Tanja Kee. “They survived, but this could have killed them.”

The incident happened last Thursday. “It rained and all animal care was done,” says Tanja. “We also had no visitors due to the bad weather. I was in the office and didn’t notice anything.”

A day later, the newcomers were discovered. It may be the group where there is normal cuddling, it was clearly not that cozy. “The group was still quite restless. When new rabbits arrive, they will determine the ranking and then there will be a lot of fighting. Then the tufts will fly around.” Fortunately, they made it out well.

“They are very stupidly put in the group like that. Then they might as well take a disease with them”

Now the two of them are in quarantine. Something that should have been done right away. “They are very stupidly put in the group like that. Then they might as well bring a disease with them. A few months ago we bought new rabbits. They were then quarantined, but we did not see that they had ear mites.” That’s a type of infection that’s quite contagious. So the rabbits were treated accordingly, but now the volunteers are forced to treat the new rabbits as well. “That also costs extra money.”

Rodent shelter or shelter

Almost every week people knock on the door of the petting zoo asking if they can leave an animal behind. The answer is almost always ‘no’. What can people do if they really can no longer take care of their rabbit? “Go to the rodent shelter or to the shelter. Even if you just want an animal. They have enough! And think before you take such an animal into your home. It is not a chair that you buy, it is a responsibility that you take on.”
