POUGHKEEPSIE (dpa-AFX) – US President Joe Biden has reaffirmed his determination to bring large-scale chip production from Asia to the United States. “The supply chain will start here and end here,” Biden announced on Thursday at an appearance at an IBM computer company plant in Poughkeepsie, New York. IBM pledged $20 billion in investments in the region over the next ten years.

Among other things, Biden pointed out that global semiconductor bottlenecks had also made American-made cars more expensive. “We have to make these chips here in America,” he said. The relocation of chip production will not only benefit the economy, but also national security.

Biden’s government had passed a law that is intended to accelerate the expansion of chip production in the USA, among other things through subsidies. After that, the industry heavyweights Intel and Qualcomm, among others, announced high investments in the USA.

Global chip production has been concentrated in Asia for decades. This is also the reason why practically all consumer electronics are produced there. Europe is also trying to make chip production on the continent more attractive with the help of subsidies./so/DP/he
