Biathlon World Cup: Dorothea Wierer with medal announcement

Dorothea Wierer is going into the upcoming Biathlon World Championships in Oberhof as a hot medal candidate. The three-time world champion is aware of her role as a favourite.

“Actually, I’m doing quite well. I’ve been a bit ill for two days now, so I didn’t train so I wouldn’t risk anything,” Wierer told the SportNews.bz portal.

At the Biathlon World Championships in Oberhof (February 8th to 19th) you have to see “how the shape is,” said the 32-year-old. Winning a medal “must be the goal”, Wierer set himself a clear goal before the competitions in Thuringia.

“Logically, you know that biathlon is special,” said the exceptional performer: “Everything has to work one hundred percent.”

In the overall World Cup, Wierer (603 points) is currently fourth behind Julia Simon from France (811), Elvira Öberg from Sweden (735) and her compatriot Lisa Vittozzi (641).

“The last races actually went well, but now there was a two-week break again. The teams are all preparing for top form in Oberhof. So, as I said, everything has to go 100 percent according to plan. Let’s be surprised,” says Wierer .

Biathlon future of Dorothea Wierer open

The competitions in Oberhof could be Wierer’s last Biathlon World Championships. Most recently, the South Tyrolean left her sporting future open.

The sudden resignation of her good friend Federica Sanfilippo changed “many things,” revealed Wierer in an interview with the Norwegian broadcaster “NRK”. “Now I don’t know what my dream is. We’ll see,” the biathlete remained vague.

You have to “take a lot of things into account,” explained Wierer: “Now it’s better to focus on this season and these races. So at the end of the season, like every year, I’ll see what I want to do with my life.”
