Only 19 Cents for the Best: Warentest Reveals Top Mineral Water at Discount Stores
The Popularity of Mineral Water
In recent years, mineral water has become increasingly popular, with Germans averaging about 150 liters consumed per person annually. Despite being primarily rainwater filtered through rock layers, this beverage has carved a niche for itself in the market. As it seeps underground, the water absorbs minerals, enhancing its value.
Understanding Mineral Water Standards
Interestingly, there’s no longer a mandatory minimum mineral content for mineral water. Germany boasts over 800 recognized mineral sources, offering consumers a choice of more than 500 varieties. Whether still or sparkling, the options cater to diverse preferences, especially the popular medium variant with moderate carbonation.
Warentest’s Comprehensive Test
The Stiftung Warentest conducted an extensive analysis, testing 29 types of medium mineral waters priced from €0.19 to €1.13 per liter. The testing process involved purchasing 1,188 bottles and assessing a total of 1,163 liters of water. Trained tasters evaluated each water for appearance, aroma, taste, and mouthfeel. The expectation for medium water is a noticeable fizz, but some products underperformed in this aspect.
Health Concerns and Quality Ratings
While the results are generally reassuring, only 19 out of the 29 tested products were deemed originally pure. Though the quantified contaminants were in the nanogram range—considered health-neutral—they slightly tarnish the perception of purity. The analysis identified issues such as pesticide residues and sweeteners, along with Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a member of the environmentally persistent PFAS compounds.
No water received a score lower than “satisfactory,” with the majority rated as “good,” and six even classified as “very good.”
Top Picks: Affordable and Reliable
Highlighting the value of price and quality, the “Lidl Saskia” from the Jessen source in Sachsen-Anhalt emerged as a standout, priced at just €0.19 per liter. For a slightly higher price, “Mineau” from Niedersachsen also received accolades, along with the high-mineral “Rosbacher” from Hessen at €0.69.
Environmental Impact of Water Packaging
The Warentest report emphasized the significant energy and resources involved in packaging production, transportation from source to store and home, as well as recycling and disposal. Hence, sourcing water closer to home can be more environmentally sustainable.
Conclusion
The results of the Warentest study shed light on not only the quality of mineral waters available in supermarkets but also the surprising affordability. For just 19 cents, consumers can access a top-rated mineral water without compromising on quality. With ample choices available, it pays to be informed and to opt for brands offering both satisfactory taste and environmental responsibility.
