Will Felix Magath soon be back in the coaching bench at the age of 71? According to media reports, a top Turkish club is looking into him.
At the end of the year, Felix Magath was still considered a coaching candidate at SpVgg Unterhaching. He turned down the coaching job at the third division team because of a lack of sporting prospects. This could now happen for Magath, as the experienced coach is said to be a candidate for Besiktas in Istanbul. Turkish and German media report this unanimously.
Besiktas is currently in fifth place in the Turkish Süperlig and is a full 17 points behind leaders and local rivals Galatasaray. Too little for the demands of the traditional club. At the end of November 2024, the club parted ways with Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst and has since been coached by interim coach Serdar Topraktepe. Its league record: two wins, three draws and one lower league. The hoped-for upward trend did not materialize. Now a new head coach is needed.
According to information from “Bild”, there was already contact between Magath and Besiktas. Club president Serdal Adali confirmed initial discussions with coaching candidates on Friday, but did not give any details: “There are many names regarding possible coaches, we had phone calls and video calls. I would not make such a decision without meeting in person.”
Magath last worked as a coach in 2022. Back then, he took over Hertha BSC in March from a relegation zone and saved the Berliners from staying in the Bundesliga, ultimately in the relegation game against Hamburger SV. Magath previously worked as a coach at FC Bayern Munich, VfL Wolfsburg and FC Schalke, among others.
