Bernal disputed in Colombia: the mural of the 2019 Tour smeared

The champion of the Ineos Grenadiers had expressed his disappointment at the election of the new president Gustavo Pedro, supporting his political opponents in the electoral campaign. And now the dispute is triggered: “You are a disappointment, you do not represent us”

After the accident, here are the disputes: Egan Bernal’s 2022 continues to prove rather complicated. In the approach to the last elections in Colombia, the champion of the Ineos Grenadiers, winner of the Tour de France 2019 and the Giro d’Italia 2021, had lined up against the future president-elect Gustavo Pedro. Bernal had not hesitated to openly support Pedro’s opponents, first supporting Federico Gutiérrez and then Rodolfo Hernandez in the second round. This interference in the political sphere did not go unnoticed and thus a real protest took shape by a slice of the supporters of the new Head of State.

The attack

The strongest gesture occurred in Zipaquirá, the locality where Bernal usually resides. Here the large mural that the inhabitants had dedicated to Egan immediately after the victory of the 2019 Tour was smeared. A historic success, because no Colombian had ever walked in Paris in the yellow jersey. On the portrait stands an eloquent inscription: “Disappointment, do not represent us”. The incident was announced by the director of the Municipal Institute of Culture, Recreation and Sports in Zipaquirá, Freddy Espinosa.

No fear

Bernal is under attack, but on Twitter he explains: “To those worried about the ‘attacks’ received, I remember that 5 months ago I was practically dead and today I can think of racing again. After everything I’ve seen in my life, I don’t think these things bother me ”. Currently the South American climber is in Montecarlo busy training in view of the return to competitions, probably at the end of July.
