Political speeches, Palestinian symbols, a controversial photo – the Berlinale is under pressure. Now festival director Tuttle could lose her job.
Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer wants to reorganize the organization of the Berlin International Film Festival. After a controversial incident at this year’s awards ceremony, Weimer wants to dismiss managing director Tricia Tuttle. The background is two incidents – a politically charged speech during the gala and a photo that government circles see as one-sided partisanship.
The starting point of the dispute is the film “Chronicles from the Siege”. The Syrian-Palestinian director Abdallah Alkhatib won the award for “Best First Film” at the Berlinale. Instead of a classic acceptance speech, he turned against the federal government. Among other things, he accused her of being a “partner in a genocide in the Gaza Strip.” His stage appearance, accompanied by a Palestinian flag and a Pali scarf, sparked heated political debates.
Another trigger is a photo: it shows Tuttle with the film crew and Palestinian symbols. At the beginning of his term in office, the Minister of State for Culture announced that he would take greater action to combat anti-Israel positions in funded cultural institutions. Now he emphasized: “The Berlinale is not a place for agitation, threats and anti-Semitism. Hatred of Israel must not be allowed to run wild there, especially not financed with taxpayers’ money.”
Criticism from the Chancellery
Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) allegedly left the event in protest. Weimer commented on the incidents after the award ceremony with the words: “The Pali activist scene showed its ugly face at the Berlinale with hatred of Israel, aggressiveness and pressure to confess.”
Weimer sees the incident as a clear transgression of boundaries. In his opinion, political actors exploited the festival for their messages. He therefore called a special meeting of the management bodies of the “Federal Cultural Events in Berlin GmbH”. The future of Tuttle is probably also on the agenda. It is still unclear whether and when a decision will be made to replace him. A spokesman for the KBB said: “There will be a discussion about the organization of the Berlinale. We will not comment on further speculation.”
Culture between freedom and responsibility
The incident raises fundamental questions: How political can an international film festival be? And where is the line between artistic freedom and political responsibility?
Opinions differ in the cultural scene. Some are calling for a clear stance against anti-Semitism and political capture. Others, however, warn against interference with the independence of cultural institutions.
