Berlin police announce strict action at pro-Russian rallies

In the future, the Berlin police want to exhaust their legal options at pro-Russian rallies. Police spokesman Thilo Cablitz said on Tuesday that they wanted to take action against the glorification of violence or a glorification of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The police are also relying on a decision by the Berlin Administrative Court, according to which the display of Russian flags at demonstrations can be limited in view of the war.

In this context, State Secretary Torsten Akmann (SPD) has already announced “tough conditions” for events on the day of liberation on May 8th, according to a report by the “Tagesspiegel”.

“We will exhaust all constitutional measures to allocate flags so that there can be no glorification of the war of aggression,” Akmann quoted the newspaper as saying.

At the beginning of April, a pro-Russian motorcade in Berlin sparked outrage. Around 400 vehicles drove through the city with Russian flags. On the same day, the killing of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha came to light.

The police then imposed conditions on a pro-Russian motorcade planned for last Sunday: only one Russian or Chechen flag or coat of arms was allowed per 25 participants. “Because a sea of flags gives the impression of a triumphant march, of glorification,” said police spokesman Cablitz.
