Berlin fountain – who is still splashing, who has disappeared?

The water features fascinate us in all districts. These are the oldest and the youngest fountains in Berlin. And unfortunately these are gone forever.

Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf

► OLD: fountain basin in the garden of Villa Grisebach, since 1890.

►NEW: Water table at Lehniner Platz, fountain at Friedrich-Hollaender-Platz 2012

► GONE: Bird bath with turtle in Gerhart-Hauptmann-Park. Removed in 2015 at the request of a citizens’ initiative because it allegedly represented a dangerous tripping hazard when playing ball.

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

►OLD: The 19 meter high Peace Column on Mehringplatz, which stands in a round pool of water. The granite and marble ensemble is from 1843

►NEW: Fountain ensemble made of four Slovenian tuff blocks over which water runs. Since 2010 in Hof Naglerstraße 4.

►GONE: The water lily fountain on the corner of Friedenstrasse and Palisadenstrasse, erected in 1986. Heavily damaged by vandalism and dismantled in 2014.

Lichtenberg

►OLD: Since 1900, the fountain with fountain and water basin has stood on the lawn of the Queen Elisabeth Herzberge Evangelical Hospital.

►NEW: The fountain field on Landsberger Allee in front of the Allee-Center. Was inaugurated in 2014.

►GONE: There was a rectangular water stone at the same place from 1985 to 2013. Dismantled due to damage and permanent pollution.

Marzahn-Hellersdorf

►OLD: Around 1890 a monumental fountain was built on the site of today’s accident hospital. Today only the stone basin remains.

►NEW: The fountain at Fred-Löwenberg-Platz. Built in 2012, can also be used as a paddling pool since 2015.

►GONE: The fairy tale fountain in Rabensteiner Straße. So broken in 1990 that it was dismantled. Six rescued ceramic figures are standing as plastic in front of the Bruno Bettelheim School.

center

►OLD: The fountain in the colonnade courtyard of the Old National Gallery is from 1880.

►NEW: The fountain “Fontes e sequestros” was only inaugurated in 2015 in the inner courtyard of Linienstrasse 155.

►GONE: Octagonal fountain “Three Girls and a Boy” from 1988. Standing in front of the former Palace Hotel. The fountain was removed when the building was demolished. The bronze figures have been sitting on a Spree wall near Karl-Liebknecht-Straße since 2007.

Neukoelln

►OLD: The cascades, fountains and fountains in Körnerpark were opened in 1912.

►NEW: The basin with gargoyles in the Lilienthalstraße cemetery is from 1999.

►DISAPPEARING: none known

Pankow

►OLD: Since 1905 there has been a fountain with a bronze putti on the current site of the Helios Klinikum Buch.

►NEW: A flat water feature was opened in 2008 on Antonplatz.

►GONE: The fountain that previously stood on Antonplatz has been demolished.

Reinickendorf

►OLD: The jubilee fountain on the property of the Queen Luise Church is from 1925. The inscription is just as old: “In the forest and on the heath, there I seek my joy”.

►NEW: Granite fountain on Franz-Neumann-Platz, built in 1985.

►GONE: The Bear Fountain in front of the Buddha Temple.

Spandau

►OLD: The field stone fountain from the 14th century was rediscovered in 1981 in the inner courtyard of Breite Straße 35 and then renovated.

►NEW: The granite water gate was inaugurated in 2001 between the Spandau train station and the Spandauer Arcaden.

►GONE: The seal fountain in Siemensstadt. Inaugurated in 1932, ten years later the bronze seal was melted down.

Steglitz-Zehlendorf

►OLD: The fountain on the Pfaueninsel was still operated by a steam engine in 1824.

►NEW: The fountain in St. Mark’s Square. Built in 1995, commissioned in 2007.

►GONE: The fountain temple in the park cemetery of Lichterfelde only exists in a rudimentary form.

Tempelhof-Schoeneberg

►OLD: The deluge fountain, which was built for the Paris World Exhibition and has been on Perelsplatz since 1909, has existed since 1896.

►NEW: In 2007, the “fountains on the town square” were inaugurated on Richard-von-Weizsäcker-Platz.

►GONE: The large fountain in the former amusement park Flora, today’s Eosanderstrasse

Treptow-Köpenick

►OLD: The drip fountain with a lion’s head has been on Dörpfeldstrasse since 1912.

►NEW: The fountain in the Volkspark on Salvador-Allende-Strasse was only built in 2003.

►GONE: The cascades in the Ortolfstraße green area have been shut down and are to be rebuilt.
