“He played very badly”

Former French world champion Benjamin Mendy is changing the club again. On Monday, his contract at FC Zurich was terminated by mutual agreement. It was only in February that the left -back from FC Lorient had signed to the Swiss first division team until 2026.
Mendy only completed eight games for Zurich, three times it was enough for the starting eleven. A muscle fiber tear has been out of action since mid -April. President Ancillo Canepa had already indicated the end of the collaboration at the end of June and curiously criticized the then coach Ricardo Moniz to have used Mendy too early.
“It was certainly not what we expected. But maybe you also have to blame the coach,” he said in the podcast “Third Halftime”. “The trainer brought him after two weeks. Unfortunately, he did an assist. That probably tempted the coach to use Mendy in the next match again.” That was a mistake because he was not yet ready mentally and physically. “He also played very badly and also caused goals. All in all, it was certainly not a happy story that we experienced here at FC Zurich.”
