Benfica’s Núñez in the spotlight from PSG, Chelsea & Man United – Almería deserves a share

Record champions need income

Darwin Núñez (22) is the Portugal Most Valuable Player, the fourth-best goalscorer in European football and recently changed his agent. According to “The Athletic“This mix will probably ensure that it becomes one of the most expensive transfers in summer 2022. Manchester United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are said to be keen on the services of the Uruguayan striker from Benfica, who are hoping for a transfer as soon as possible.

Exactly that seems unlikely, however, with all three clubs needing clarification on key areas ahead of a deal in the range of €70m-80m. At Man United the question of coaching should be clarified, in Chelsea the sale of the entire club and at PSG it depends on the decision of Kylian Mbappé (23) whether he will sign a new contract or go on a free transfer. Both Mbappé and Núñez have 31 goals this season.

Núñez has already been linked with West Ham United in the winter, but the Uruguayan is said to have been little interested. Benfica, who are also dependent on profits from player sales in the coming summer, brought the attacker in 2020 for a fee of 24 million euros from UD Almería – the second in the second Spanish division secured a resale stake. This amounts to 20 percent of the transfer profits that Benfica generates in a sale. With a transfer fee of 70 million euros, a further 9.2 million euros would flow to the promotion candidate.

Núñez is not only in fine form in the Portuguese Liga, where he scored his third hat-trick against Belenenses SAD on Matchday 29, but also in the Champions League. There he scored twice against FC Barcelona and once against FC Bayern, Ajax Amsterdam and Liverpool FC. In the “premier class” Benfica is on the brink of defeat after the 3-1 loss against the Reds and a quick return to the financially important competition is anything but certain. The “eagles” will most likely end the season in Portugal in 3rd place and will therefore have to buy the ticket through the qualification, which will only end shortly before the end of the transfer phase.

So it’s understandable that Benfica want to ensure financial security with a timely sale of Núñez and thus have enough time to sign a replacement.
