“After careful consideration”
Axel Witsel has ended his career in the Belgian national team. The 34-year-old former Dortmund player and currently under contract with Atlético Madrid will not add to his 130 appearances (12 goals) for the “Red Devils”. Only Jan Vertonghen (36) played more often for the Belgian selection. Witsel took part in three world and two European championships, at the 2018 World Cup it was enough for third place.
“After careful consideration, it was with great emotion that I made the decision to retire from international football. It has been a great pride to represent my country for the past 15 years. Now it’s important for me to devote more time to my family and focus on my club. Thank you to everyone who made it possible for me to thrive under the Red Devils jersey,” the defensive midfielder announced on his social channels.
