Belgian suspected of terrorism arrested in Romania: man would have financed Hezbollah | News

On Friday, 58-year-old Mohammad Bazzi, suspected of terrorism, was arrested at Bucharest airport. This is reported by the US Department of Defense. The man, who has both a Belgian and a Lebanese passport, is said to have financially supported the terrorist movement Hezbollah. The Americans offered up to the equivalent of 9.5 million euros for the tip that would lead to his arrest.

Public prosecutor Breon Peace reports that Bazzi was arrested upon arrival at the airport in the Romanian capital. “He thought he could secretly move hundreds of thousands of dollars from the United States to Lebanon,” said Peace.

It would be money that Bazzi earned in Belgium, Lebanon, Iraq and West Africa. The companies he did this with were already added to a sanctions list by the US five years ago.

Hezbollah is a Shia political party and militant movement in Lebanon that receives support from Iran. Much of the international community views Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. Bazzi is extradited to the US and risks decades in prison, according to Peace.
