The football associations from Chile and Peru are fighting before the Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS to exclude Ecuador from the 2022 World Cup. The case is essentially about full-back Byron Castillo (23, Club León FC), whose eligibility to play in the World Cup qualifiers is doubted by the two associations. World governing body FIFA again rejected the appeal from Chile and Peru on September 16 and confirmed a decision by its own disciplinary committee.
This had come to the conclusion “that the player has the permanent citizenship of Ecuador according to Art. 5 Para. 1 of the implementing provisions of the FIFA Statutes”. Ecuador will face hosts Qatar in the opening game on November 20th. The CAS announced on Friday that the arbitration proceedings had started and were at an early stage. Peru and Chile are each hoping to secure Ecuador’s place in the finals.
