Nico Schlotterbeck was well on his way to extending his contract in Dortmund. But suddenly the situation changed due to a personnel decision. Media reports anger the defender enormously.

BVB central defender Nico Schlotterbeck has clearly rejected reports of an imminent contract extension in Dortmund. After the international match against Ghana, he said in the Stuttgart stadium: “I have to clearly deny that. Unfortunately, we’re not that far.”

It had previously been reported that the 26-year-old would stay at BVB and that an agreement would be announced this week. Schlotterbeck cited the club’s separation from sports director Sebastian Kehl as the reason. The defense attorney had negotiated with him for a long time. New talks with Kehl’s successor Ole Book are still pending.

Schlotterbeck continued: “I negotiated with Sebastian for a long time. Sebastian is no longer there. Of course, I already called Ole. That’s why I’m very surprised by the reporting.”

He ruled out a quick solution: “It’s definitely not at the point where we’re going to write about a short-term extension. That’s why I have to say something about it. That’s stupid, even for BVB fans. But as I said, it’s not an easy situation for me right now either.”

Schlotterbeck left it open whether he could leave Dortmund: “What is the danger? As I said, Sebastian is no longer there. I negotiated with Sebastian for a long time. I would probably have made a decision in the next few weeks. Now the situation has changed a bit.” His contract with BVB expires in the summer of 2027. Most recently he has been linked to clubs such as Real Madrid and FC Bayern Munich.
