THEn the occasion of the Prima della Scala 2024, Rai 1 changes the schedule to make room for the great social event in Milan with a long live TV and the interventions by Milly Carlucci and Bruno Vespa. The work chosen to inaugurate the La Scala season And The force of destiny by Giuseppe Verdi, conducted by maestro Riccardo Chailly. On stage, Anna Netrebko, Brian Jagde and Fabrizio Beggi.
Before La Scala 2024 on TV on Rai 1 and beyond: where to watch the live broadcast
The event will start on Rai 1 at 5.45pm and then conclude at 10pm. For the occasion, Dancing with the Stars 2024 is not broadcast and will return on Saturday 14 December with the second semi-final. Milly Carlucci and Bruno Vespa will have “the honor of being there on the side package to introduce the Prima”commented the presenter on Instagram. This year too they will introduce the work to viewers, with comments, curiosities and the story of what happens at the Teatro della Scala.
Carlucci has been at the helm of the event since 2016when the event moved from Rai 5 to Rai 1. Until 2019 it was supported by Antonio Di Bella, replaced by Vespa starting from 2020. As always, in addition to the applause at the end which acts as an approval rating, a lot of space will be dedicated to what happens around the Premiere.
In particular, the arrival of guests including actors, singers, presenters, representatives of the institutionsand more. Connected from the foyer, the journalist Serena Scorzoniwhich will tell the worldly and more glamorous part, where the spotlight will be focused mainly on the excellent looks and presences. La Prima della Scala 2024 will also be available in audio description, streaming on RaiPlay – where it will remain for 15 days – and on Radio 3 starting at 6pmconducted by Gaia Varon and Oreste Bossini.

The force of destiny at the cinema and abroad
The opening of La Scala is an event of international importance. Which is why it will also be broadcast abroad this year. In Europe it will be broadcast live on TV in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, LuxembourgCzech Republic and Switzerland. In Asia it will be broadcast in Japan.
In some countries, it will also always be shown live in some cinemas. This is the case in Latin America, Australia, Finland, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Spain and Switzerland. In Italy around 20 cinemas will be involved of the UCI Cinemas circuit. Finally, it will be available worldwide on the Medici TV platform.
The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella is absent
It is customary for the highest officials of the State to attend the opening of the Verona season. However, as already happened in 2023, the Qurinal announced that the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will not be there due to institutional commitments that cannot be postponed.
In fact, he will fly to Paris to participate in the reopening ceremony of the Notre-Dame Cathedraldamaged by a fire that broke out on 15 April 2019. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was also absentwho like Mattarella has not participated in the Premiere since 2022. However, the presence of the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli has been confirmed.
Before La Scala 2024, The force of destiny: plot
The force of destiny stars Donna Leonora, daughter of the Marquis of Calatrava. She is in love with Alvaro, but her father does not approve the union and therefore decides to escape with him. The marquis, however, manages to stop the escape and surprises two lovers. Alvaro immediately throws the gun to the ground, but a shot goes off. The Marquis, wounded and on the verge of death, curses his daughter.
Alvaro has no choice but to escape. Leonora disguises herself as a man to look for him, but in a tavern she finds Vargas’ brother Don Carlowho has long been on the trail of her sister and her beloved to avenge her father. Obviously killing them. So Leonora takes refuge in the convent of the Madonna degli Angeli and the only one to whom he reveals his identity is Father Guardian. Alvaro thinks Leonor is dead and joins the army. He fights side by side with Carlo, whose life he saves and a fraternal friendship is born between the two.
Some time later, when Alvaro is wounded, he gives him Leonora’s portrait. Carlo discovers the true identity of his comrade and vows to challenge him to a duel once he is healed. The clash arrives right in the Convent of the Madonna degli Angeli, where he has taken refuge in the meantime Alvaro. These he dies and shortly afterwards Carlo meets his sister. Although time has passed, the thirst for revenge has not abated at all. And indeed he pierces her with his sword.

The melodrama returns to the Scaliger program after 23 years. It had been absent, in fact, since 2001. In the past, it was chosen as the opening title only on one other occasion, in 1965. Presented in 1862 in St. Petersburg, the work will be presented again in the definitive version of 1869 and it will be divided into 4 acts, with a duration of approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes.
Riccardo Chailly, director of the Teatro alla Scala since 2015, is at his ninth Verdi title in the Milanese theatre. The soprano Anna Netrebko takes on the role of Donna Leonora. Brian Jagde is Don Alvarowhile Ludovic Tézier plays Don Carlo by Vargas. Fabrizio Beggi plays the role of the Marquis of Calatrava and Alexander Vinogradov that of Father Guardian.
Vasilisa Berzhanskaya is Preziosilla, Marco Filippo Romano is on stage with the role of Fra Melitoneinstead Carlo Bosi is Mastro Trabuco. Furthermore, Marcela Rahal (Curra), Huanhong Li (Alcalde) and Xhieldo Hyseni as a surgeon complete the cast. The director of the opera is Leo Muscato, while the live television is entrusted to Arnalda Canali.
