Oliver Baumann has a chance of becoming Germany’s number one. However, the league game with Hoffenheim in St. Pauli was not helpful.

FC St. Pauli has achieved an important and rare home win in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga. In the 1-0 (0-0) against the 1899 Hoffenheim, the Hamburgers benefited on Friday evening from a bad pass from TSG goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, who enabled the winning goal of Noah Weißhaupt (51.).

Baumann is with Alexander Nübel (VfB Stuttgart) in a duel for the place in the goal of the German national team. National coach Julian Nagelsmann wants to commit to the upcoming Nation League quarter-finals against Italy (20th and 23rd March).

With the deserved victory, St. Pauli ended a series of six winless games and moved up to one point to the TSG. Hoffenheim had not lost four games in a row recently, but disappointed on Friday across the board and continued to worry. The distance to relegation place 16 is six points before the competition.

Caderabek’s clamps not punished

In the first round, St. Pauli at the sold -out Millerntor had the clearly better chances, especially according to standard situations. In addition, Danel Sinani Baumann forced a parade (27th) with a shot from 18 meters.

After the following corner it was really scarce for Hoffenheim, in two ways. Sieben van der Heyden’s flight header passed not far from the left post and above all Pavel Kaderabek was lucky that his duel behavior did not lead to a penalty. He clutched van der Heyden clearly and intensely, but neither referee Felix Brych nor Var Christian Dingert took up.

Hoffenheim brought almost nothing offensive in the first half, had only one shot and remained without a clear chance.

Baumann serves loyal

After the break, Baumann St. Pauli invited to score. His risky pass in his own penalty area landed loyal to the sprinting Philipp, who cleverly overdated Baumann and then lay down to the scorer Weißhaupt. Six minutes later, Baumann parried strongly against Jackson Irvine’s header, the captain was always dangerous after corner balls.

Hoffenheim coach Christian Ilzer reacted after almost an hour, Haris Tabakovic and Marius Bülter brought for the offensive. Then it went a little better for the guests, but still not good. After all, the young professional Bazoumana Touré, who had just been substitute, came to a degree, headed by left (72nd).

In added time, St. Pauli briefly got into swimming, received almost an unfortunate own goal by loyal, but brought the lead to a well -deserved victory. So the previously weak promoter celebrated the third win of the season in their own stadium.
