Because of sanctions: Chelsea have to let Antonio Rüdiger go – Tuchel disappointed

Because of sanctions

Antonio Rüdiger (29)’s time at Chelsea will end this summer – the centre-back, whose contract expires on June 30, has opted against an extension, coach Thomas Tuchel revealed on Sunday after the Blues’ win over West Ham (1st June). :0) confirmed on Sky Sports. The coach said: “He informed me a few days ago in a personal conversation. Of course we are disappointed.”

Previously there had been reports from “The Athletic” and “Sky”, which cited the fact that the “Blues” were not allowed to negotiate new contracts due to the sanction imposed on Roman Abramovich as the reason for Rüdiger’s decision against Chelsea. The German international can change clubs free of charge in the summer. Tuchel explained on Sunday: “I have the feeling that we have given everything for several months, I personally and also the club. Now we have reached a situation where we could no longer fight (for him) because of the sanctions.”

Note: The first version of this article appeared on Transfermarkt on April 23 and was updated according to Tuchel’s statements.

Due to the alleged closeness of its owner Roman Abramovich to Russian President Putin, Chelsea was subjected to severe sanctions by the British government after the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. Chelsea are currently not allowed to make player transfers or engage in contract negotiations. “Otherwise we could have at least continued fighting,” said Tuchel. “Our hands have been tied for weeks. I don’t know what would have happened, but that’s his decision. It’s not pretty for us, but we don’t take it personally.”

According to previous reports, Rüdiger wanted certainty about his future by the end of April. His employer is up for sale, but April will be long gone before it is clear who will be awarded the contract and how to deal with Rüdiger. In addition, it is not clear whether the new owners also want to present the German national player with a four-year contract with a salary of around 14 million euros per season. According to The Athletic, this was the Blues’ much-improved offer that was on the table in early February. This was not signed because there are said to have been discrepancies in terms of consultant fees and earnest money.

Born in Berlin, Rüdiger has played in the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart, in Serie A for Roma and 196 times for Chelsea – with a move to Real Madrid he would have completed the top four leagues. In the “Royal” he would meet David Alaba (29) in central defense, who also made a free transfer.
