Thanks to a beautiful goal from Jesper Karlsson, AZ has won the midweek duel with FC Groningen: 1-0.
The Alkmaarders struggled for a long time to find space against the visitors, who already played with one man less from the 4th minute after a red card for defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo. Halfway through the second half, Karlsson brought the solution with a nice long shot: 1-0.
For AZ, it meant the fifth victory in a row in the competition, having previously defeated Fortuna Sittard (2-1), Sparta Rotterdam (3-1), Ajax (1-2) and Willem II (4-1). In between, coach Pascal Jansen’s team also had success in the Conference League (1-0 against Randers FC) and the KNVB Cup (4-1 against Heracles Almelo) in the clear month of December.
