Beau van Erven Dorens was applauded from all sides a few years ago as the presenter of programs such as The Amsterdam Project, 5 Jaar Later and Beau Five Days Inside, but now the presenter seems to be following a different course. In addition to his talk show, he started an adventure show yesterday: Race for the Rings.

Race for the Rings flops

While Beau is already struggling with the slumped viewing figures of his talk show, he now sees this new attempt flop. Race for the Rings started with a very meager 588 thousand viewers (13% market share) on RTL 4. Both NPO 1 and the smaller competitor SBS 6 did better in prime time.

Race for the Rings barely managed to get a spot in the top 15 viewing figures. Tina Nijkamp, former broadcaster boss of SBS 6, thinks it is clear: “Formats in which unknown couples have to do assignments with the aim of winning a wedding or honeymoon seem in The Netherlands, after Love Letters, will never be a success.”

Previously unsuccessful formats in this genre are HartsTocht (Net5), Million Dollar Wedding (RTL4) and Let’s Get Married (SBS6).

Twelve crafts

It continues to haunt Beau that he is somewhat the presenter of the twelve crafts and thirteen accidents. He always gets mad when someone describes him that way. In fact, he even ended up in a long-running feud with Wilfred Genee. “What kind of nonsense is that?” he snapped at him on the radio years ago. “What bullshit!”

Beau once felt framed by Wilfred when he was a guest on one of his programs. “Look, such a boy is very nice, puts you on such a chair and then just says: ‘You are that man of twelve crafts, thirteen accidents.’ He keeps spouting nonsense. It’s a form of journalism, but it’s the lowest of the low.”

The Passion and VI

Wilfred did a lot better than Beau yesterday. After The Passion: Ascension (1.2 million viewers and 27%) on NPO 1, his program Today Inside was the most watched program on prime time. 857 thousand people (21%) watched the broadcast on SBS 6.

The other most-watched prime-time titles were Mr. Frank Visser Does Uitspraak with 844 thousand viewers (19%) on SBS 6, POP22 with 692 thousand viewers (16%) on NPO 1 and Nieuwsuur with 444 thousand viewers (10%) on NPO 2.

The reality soap De Bevers started with 312 thousand viewers (7%) on RTL 5.

Viewing figures

Programs that also failed to make the top 15 include Khalid and Sophie (544 thousand), Shownieuws (509 thousand) and HLF8 (308 thousand).
