Beatles could win Grammy (but wouldn’t get it)

This year the Grammys will be awarded on February 4th in Los Angeles. It could be a very feminine affair if you look at the nomination list. At the forefront: the American singer SZA.

But there could also be something to gain for the remaining Beatles members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. However, there is no chance (yet) of a Grammy for their “new” song “Now And Then”, which is not due to the strict AI rules issued by the Academy, but because it is released so late (end of October 2023 ) appeared.

Nevertheless, the Fab Four are nominated – for best music video. The newly produced, animated clip for the “Revolver” classic “I’m Only Sleeping”, which was put together by artist and director Em Cooper for the release of the Super Deluxe Edition, could be appreciated. The highlight: It almost looks like an animated oil painting.

Of course, the little film fits the avant-garde composition and experimental recording method of the piece (and other tracks on “Revolver”) like a glove.

The video explores the space between dreams and wakefulness and was made on celluloid plates. Cooper painted each picture individually with oil paint over many months before turning them into an animated film.

However, the Beatles video is in competition with numerous other music videos at the Grammys, including those by Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar, which also have a good chance of winning the award.

Grammys 2024: Best Music Video (Nominations)

  • The Beatles “I’m Only Sleeping”
  • Tyler Childers “In Your Love”
  • Billie Eilish “What Was I Made For?”
  • Kendrick Lamar “Count Me Out”
  • Troye Sivan “Rush”

By the way, it would be the British band’s 13th official Grammy (in addition to numerous awards in the Hall of Fame and for lifetime achievement) if they were directly nominated. But in the “Best Music Video” category, only the producers and directors of the films are honored, not the musicians behind them.

The last time there was one of the coveted gold statues for the Beatles was in 2011: “The Beatles” won in the “Best Historical Album” category.
