Standing out as one of Canada’s most prestigious sports centers, BC Place opened its doors on June 19, 1983.
While the original design of the stadium bore the signature of Stantec Architecture, it was modernized with a retractable roof system, the first of its kind in North America, through extensive renovations carried out in 2011.
UNFORGETTABLE ORGANIZATIONS
BC Place has hosted many international events since its establishment.
The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics, the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup final and the 1986 World Fair (Expo 86) are among the most important events hosted by this venue.
The first goal in the stadium was scored in the match played between Vancouver Whitecaps and Seattle Sounders on June 20, 1983, and was followed by more than 60 thousand fans. This historic goal was scored by English football player Peter Beardsley.
TEAMS AND RECORDS
BC Place has been home to the BC Lions (Canadian Football League) and Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS) since its establishment.
Although the stadium’s audience capacity varies with various configurations, it has a capacity of approximately 54 thousand 500 for football matches.
The attendance record at the stadium was broken with 65 thousand 61 people at the Ed Sheeran concert on September 2, 2023.
THE CENTER OF THE MUSIC WORLD
The stadium is the epicenter of Vancouver not only in sports but also in cultural and artistic events.
Among the world-famous names that have performed so far are bands such as AC/DC, Guns N’Roses and Foo Fighters.
PREPARATIONS FOR 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP
Vancouver is gearing up for a big football extravaganza around BC Place. Fan zones will be established throughout the city and around the stadium during the tournament.
In order to reflect the spirit of the tournament throughout Vancouver, thematic events such as the “Canyon Kick-Off” on the Capilano Suspension Bridge, as well as free public viewing points where giant screens will be installed in surrounding areas such as Surrey, will host football fans.
The stadium itself will host a total of 7 matches, including the group stages and qualifying rounds.
