At the Munich crisis group BayWa, after several top managers, three supervisory board members are giving way to pressure from owners and shareholders.
The most prominent name among the outgoing company controllers is CSU politician Monika Hohlmeier, who will leave the committee on March 31st. In addition to the daughter of the former Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauß, the Austrian Raiffeisen official and manager Michael Höllerer will also end his position on the BayWa supervisory board early on March 31st. Monique Surges, the head of the German Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand, will also be leaving in May.
Long-term supervisory boards under criticism
Farmers President Joachim Rukwied, who has been a member of the committee since 2013, is not named as one of the departing parties in the BayWa announcement. The group, which is primarily active in agricultural trading, has been in crisis since 2024. The trigger was debts of over five billion euros that the Munich-based company had accumulated in the 2010s as a result of a failed foreign expansion. That is why, in addition to the former board of directors, the long-term supervisory boards also came under pressure. The DSW investor community became clearest: “As if glued to Pattex,” criticized its vice president Daniela Bergdolt at the 2025 general meeting.
Stricter selection criteria for the board of directors
The chairman of the supervisory board, Gregor Scheller, who has only been in office since 2024 and is therefore not one of those responsible for the imbalance, is not among those addressed. Due to the crisis, two chairmen and the long-standing CFO have already left their positions on the BayWa board. Under Scheller’s direction, the supervisory board is now supposed to change the way it works; the selection criteria for the supervisory board have already been tightened.
