Harry Kane

As of: March 5, 2026 • 11:52 a.m

Harry Kane will be missing from FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday. While it’s not the end of the world for the team, it could jeopardize the Englishman’s hunt for Robert Lewandowski’s goal record.

At the end of the press conference, Vincent Kompany had a surprise in store. “You can write everything down briefly,” he said to the journalists present: “Ito (Hiroki Ito, Note d. Red.) is not there, Phonzy (Alphonso Davies, Note d. Red.) is not there and Harry Kane is not there.”

Kane is missing from FC Bayern against Gladbach

It was already clear in advance that defensive players Ito and Davies would not be playing on Friday evening against Borussia Mönchengladbach, but it was not known beforehand that Kane would also be out.

Kompany immediately smoothed over the growing worry lines among FC Bayern Munich fans by announcing that Kane simply did not recover in time after a blow to his calf and would only miss the game against Gladbach.

Wobbles Kane’s hunt for the Lewandowski record?

Now the striker’s loss is not the end of the world for the German record champions because of how long it took. Given that he is eleven points ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund in the championship, he would probably have had a break in one or two league games anyway.

But the injury could definitely have consequences for Kane. This means less for the goalgetter himself and more for his hunt for the record for the most goals in a Bundesliga season, which is currently (still) held by Robert Lewandowski with 41 goals in the 2020/21 season.

Kane advantage over Lewandowski

After 24 appearances in the first 24 matchdays, Kane has 30 goals to his name. Most recently he was successful nine times in the last five matches. For comparison: Lewandowski had already scored 31 times in his record year at the same point in the season and had already missed one game.

A glimmer of hope for Kane is the fact that Lewandowski missed four games in the final stretch of the 2021 season with a strained ligament. So if Kane is fit again next week and doesn’t get injured again, as Kompany suggested, he will have more opportunities to break Lewandowski’s record, even if the Pole is likely to retain the better goals rate per game played (1.41).

Goal rate gives Kane hope

He was convinced that the Lewandowski record was one of Kane’s goals for the current season his latest double pack against Borussia Dortmund (3:2) at Sky confirmed. “Yes, definitely! I just have to keep doing what I’ve been doing so far,” he explained and announced: “We’ll see at the end of April and beginning of May whether it’s possible.”

Even with the loss against Gladbach, things are looking good for Kane: based on his previous average of 1.25 goals per Bundesliga game, nine games would be enough for him to reach the 41 goal mark, which would mean he would share the record with Lewandowski. However, there is no guarantee that he will succeed.
