Bayern Munich | Next chance for Choupo-Moting

After his strong performance in the Bundesliga, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is looking forward to the cup stage.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann announced before FC Bayern Munich’s second-round game on Wednesday (8:45 p.m. / Sky and ZDF) at FC Augsburg that the striker would be back in the starting XI.

“Of course he was lucky to always have an extremely strong competitor with a similar physical class in Lewy. Now we no longer have the classic nine – now he can get more playing time,” said Nagelsmann.

The coach said there were various reasons why the long-time backup didn’t get that much playing time after Robert Lewandowski changed in the summer, without going into detail. One point was injury problems.

“Very intelligent”

Judging by Nagelsmann’s hymn of praise, it can’t have been a question of quality. In terms of football, Choupo-Moting is outstanding, has good technique and a good body, and scoring goals is “very intelligent,” said the 35-year-old Bayern coach.

Choupo-Moting (33) underlined his qualities in the 5-0 win against SC Freiburg. “He worked well in rehab. He’s someone who also demands something to become aware of his role,” said Nagelsmann. “He also comes into the coaching office and wants things explained.” He prefers that to players retiring. “If the coach then brings you, you also have to deliver. Otherwise you don’t need to visit the coach’s office,” said Nagelsmann.

Choupo-Moting, who only came on as a substitute in the final phase of the 0-1 draw against FC Augsburg, delivered at least in the end. “He has the self-confidence to be able to help decide games. In general I like that because as a player you put yourself under a bit of pressure.”

For Choupo-Moting, who moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Bayern two years ago, it’s also about self-promotion: the contract of the long-time Cameroon international expires at the end of the season.
