Bayern Munich | History: FC Bayern’s 16-goal celebration in the DFB Cup

Games in the DFB Cup are like holidays for lower-class teams. After all, the regional kickers can always look forward to prominent guests from the Bundesliga. In the case of DJK Waldberg, the joy in the first round of the 1997/98 DFB Cup season didn’t last too long. Because Bundesliga soccer club FC Bayern Munich made short work of the then fifth division club and celebrated a record win.

“Conceive fewer than ten goals,” Waldberg goalkeeper Peter Hofmann demanded of his front men before the game. However, on August 15, 1997, the target only lasted a full 45 minutes. By the time the break whistle, FC Bayern had already scored ten goals.

In the end, the spectators saw a 16:1 – together with the 17:0 of the Stuttgarter Kickers against VfB 05 Knielingen in 1941 the highest-scoring game in the history of the cup.

Due to the high demand for tickets and the insufficient infrastructure, the club from Lower Franconia switched to the round of 1. FC Nürnberg. 35,500 spectators witnessed the overwhelming victory in Nuremberg’s Frankenstadion.

Above all, the strike duo of FC Bayern was in the best of moods. Giovane Élber opened the scoring and the Brazilian would be happy to score two more before being substituted at half-time. Attack partner Carsten Jancker went one better: The Sturmtank mutated to the shock of the Waldberg back team and scored a total of five goals.

Walberger goal celebrated as a “historic minute”.

Midfielder Dietmar Hamann was twice as successful, Mehmet Scholl, Mario Basler, Thorsten Fink, Thomas Strunz, Thomas Helmer and Ruggiero Rizzitelli also celebrated.

However, it was not just the end result that was unforgettable: the interim goal to make it 1:2 by Waldberger Peter Haase in the 16th minute was celebrated by the stadium announcer in Nuremberg as a “historic minute”.

Meanwhile, the DJK Waldberg from the 630-inhabitant village kicks in the district class. The game against the stars of FC Bayern should be the first and only one in the DFB Cup. That season, however, the Munich side went all the way to Berlin: in the final, Giovanni Trapattoni’s team beat MSV Duisburg 2-1.
