Bayer Leverkusen has to cope with the defeat against Paris, the first under coach Kasper Hjulmand. He announces that he will strike back soon.

Kasper Hjulmand quickly fled into the dressing room; after the bitter lesson against the defending champion’s ripped-off ball artists, the Bayer Leverkusen coach was satisfied. The overwhelmed “Werkself” were defeated in the wild 2:7 (1:4) against Paris St. Germain, and the pressure in the Champions League is growing.

“When you make mistakes, it’s normal that you get punished,” said Edmond Tapsoba after the game on Prime Video: “It’s disappointing. We know that Paris Saint-Germain is one of the best teams in the world, we knew it would be difficult.”

Leverkusen’s double goalscorer Aleix García, who equalized 1-1 with a penalty kick in the 38th minute of the game and then scored a dream goal into the right corner of the goal (54th), was also served. “It was a great goal,” said García. “But we can’t really be positive about anything today. We have to analyze the game. We are a young team and have to improve.”

García also referred to having played against “one of the best teams in the world”. “They scored three goals just before half-time and we couldn’t cope with that,” García said. He didn’t see the red card for Robert Andrich, which he saw after just under half an hour, as a negative sticking point. “Rob made a bad decision at that moment. But that happens in football,” said García. “They then had a red card and it was ten against ten.”

Coach Hjulmand summed up: “We lost the game seven minutes before halftime, we were just back in the game – and then we wanted too much, were too open and made too many mistakes.” He was only able to make the change at half-time, said Hjulmand. “We’ve never played in a system like this with one man less. That changes the positions.”

Hjulmand, who suffered his first defeat as Bayer coach, continued: “It really hurts to lose in this way and with 2:7.” But: “It’s now our challenge to get rid of that. And to hit back against Freiburg on Sunday. We’ll be there.”
