FC Bayern Munich suffered their second defeat in the third game of the Basketball Euroleague. In the end, the German champions lost clearly against the undefeated team from Zalgiris Kaunas 70:98 (33:45).
One former teammate in particular caused problems for Bayern: Sylvain Francisco excelled with 19 points and as a passer. The German world and European champion Maodo Lo also impressed against his former club and scored 10 points. His national team colleague Andreas Obst was the most noticeable Munich player with 15 points.
After a good start, coach Gordon Herbert’s host team trailed for long stretches. From the middle of the first quarter, the Lithuanians steadily pulled away. At halftime the guests were already twelve points ahead.
In the third period, Munich were temporarily behind by more than 20 points, but came close again before the final quarter. But with an 11-0 run at the start of the final period, Kaunas made everything clear.
34 games left in the main round
At the start of the Euroleague season, the Munich team lost 79:87 to title favorites Panathinaikos Athens. The score against Red Star Belgrade was 97:88. This season, for the first time, 20 representatives will be taking part in the league format competition. That means 38 games in the main round alone.
Bayern have set reaching the Euroleague playoffs as their goal. Next Tuesday the Munich team will host Emporio Armani Milan. After saying goodbye to Alba Berlin, FC Bayern is the only German representative in the highest European club competition.
