Bas Dost suffers from inflamed heart muscle – had to be resuscitated

Discharged from hospital

The article was first published on November 2nd and has now been updated with new information.

Dutch professional footballer Bas Dost suffers from an inflamed heart muscle. That was also the cause of his sudden collapse on Sunday, the former Bundesliga professional announced on the website of his club NEC Nijmegen on Thursday. The 34-year-old striker collapsed in the final stages of the game against AZ Alkmaar and had to be resuscitated on the pitch. He was then taken to the hospital.

Update 11/10: Dost has been released from the hospital, NEC announced on Friday. He was given a defibrillator, like Daley Blind and Christian Eriksen in the past. “I’m happy to be back home and will now recover in peace,” said Dost. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in the past. We really appreciate it.”

“I was lucky that I was successfully resuscitated on the pitch,” wrote Dost at the beginning of November. He is deeply grateful to the doctors from both clubs. According to him, it is still unclear what the cause of the inflammation is.

The former VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt player wants to fully recover with his family in the next few weeks. Only then will he be able to say more about his future as an active footballer. The away game was abandoned in the 90th minute when the score was 2-1 for Nijmegen. The game is scheduled to finish on December 6th.
