Bas Dost, raised in Coevorden, touched by support after feeling unwell. ‘Now notice that the football world can be human’

Bas Dost, who grew up in Coevorden, suddenly collapsed on the field on Sunday evening just before the end of AZ-NEC (1-2). Everything and everyone was very frightened.

After a few minutes, the players and supporters breathed a sigh of relief when it turned out that the NEC striker had regained consciousness. While the striker was carried off the field on a stretcher and was loudly serenaded by both supporter camps, Dost briefly raised his arms in the air.

The NEC attacker lets us know how he is doing through his club and hospital bed. “Dear colleagues, NEC members and football fans. First of all, I would like to thank my colleagues on the medical staff and the medical people at AZ, as well as the people at the Northwest Hospital, for acting quickly and correctly. I would also like to thank my teammates and the AZ players who immediately surrounded me like a warm shield.”

Heavy day

To continue: “I understand that many expressions of support are coming in from home and abroad, which touches me. The football world is sometimes hard, but now I also notice how human we can be. When I left the field I heard applause from everyone in the stadium, which made me very happy. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sympathizes with me and my family. We greatly appreciate this support.”

Dost concludes with the following words: “I have now been in contact with my teammates and the staff. I was also able to tell them that I am doing well under the circumstances and that I am in good hands. In the coming days, investigations will reveal what caused what happened to me yesterday. For now it is important that I can recover in peace and find a place for this together with my family.”

“For the players and staff, I hope that the team performance we achieved yesterday can be continued in the coming matches. I would like to ask all NEC members to get behind our team, yesterday was also a tough day for our staff and players. They can really use your support. I will hear from you again soon and would like to say to everyone again: thank you for your support. See you soon! Bass.”
