Bartees Strange likes to let off steam between styles. Indie rock is loaded with electro-pop (“Wretched”), there’s room for jazzy brass breaks (“Heavy Heart”), and when it’s happy about finally being able to make a career on “Cosigns” (“I’m in LA , I’m with Phoebe, I’m a genius, damn!”), hip hop meets a dance beat.

Still, Farm To Table’s best songs are three stripped-down ballads that mix the personal and political: On the intimate “Tours” he discovers that his life isn’t all that different from his father’s, who was in the military was. In the soulful “Hennessy” he evokes the sense of togetherness of the African American community. And he sings “Hold The Line” for George Floyd’s daughter.
