Barça loan Dest hopes to stay at Milan – currently only second choice

Second choice at the moment

Sergiño Dest (21), on loan from FC Barcelona to AC Milan, makes no secret of wanting to stay at his new club beyond the end of the season. “The contract between Milan and Barcelona includes an option to buy, so I’ll do my best here because I hope Milan sign me permanently,” he said (quoted via “Barcawelt.de“) on Thursday as part of his official presentation. Dest was “very happy” in Milan just a few weeks after arriving.

The full-back left Barcelona late in the transfer window, where he no longer figured in coach Xavi’s plans. In the first games of the new season, the coach refrained from calling Dest into the squad. Before moving to Milan, there had also been rumors that he could move to Borussia Dortmund in exchange for Thomas Meunier (31). In Milan, meanwhile, he was “in the right place” to develop further. Dest expects to “become a more complete player” with Serie A appearances. He identified one area in particular as his weakness: working off the ball. “Serie A has a reputation for being very demanding defensively and I need to improve that part of my game,” he said.

Dest is currently the second choice behind captain Davide Calabria (25), which is why his premiere in the Italian House of Lords is still a long way off. At least in the Champions League he was substituted on twice in the closing stages. At the moment, it seems questionable whether Milan will exercise the purchase option, which is said to be around 20 million euros. For a similar fee, Dest joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2020, where his contract runs until 2025.
