Coach Hansi Flick won his first title with FC Barcelona and also dealt arch-rivals Real Madrid a crushing defeat in the Spanish Supercopa.
Barca triumphed 5-2 (4-1) in the duel in Jeddah/Saudi Arabia on Sunday and, like in the 4-0 win in the first leg of the league in Madrid at the end of October, duped the Royals.
In a hard-fought exchange of blows, Real (with Antonio Rüdiger in the starting line-up) took the lead through Kylian Mbappe (5th), but then Barcelona turned up the heat. Lamine Yamal (22′), Robert Lewandowski (36’/foul penalty), Raphinha (39′) and Alejandro Balde (45’+10) took a clear lead by the break.
Raphinha, who scored three goals in the Champions League 4-1 against FC Bayern, increased the score to 5-1 (48th). After a red card against “emergency goalkeeper” Wojciech Szczesny because of an emergency stop, Real sensed another chance, but only made it 2-5 through Rodrygo (61′).
Ex-Leipzig player Dani Olmo, whose eligibility to play has been the subject of unspeakable controversy for weeks, came on as a substitute in the second half.
