Uli Hoeneß’ renewed defense of World Cup hosts Qatar is not well received by his own fans. In the Bundesliga game against Leverkusen, the supporters vented their displeasure.

“State visits, training camps, thousands of deaths to celebrate the World Cup… It’s only better for your own conscience, Uli H.!” In the Bundesliga soccer match between Bayern Munich and Bayer 04 Leverkusen honorary president Uli Hoeneß protested with a banner. Background: Hoeneß had a verbal duel with Qatar critic Andreas Rettig, the former managing director of the German Football League (DFL), in a TV show last weekend.

“Qatar – World Cup of Shame” is a four-part “Sport inside” documentary series about one of the most controversial sporting events of our time: the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

“King of Hypocrites” vs. “Ambassador of Qatar”

“King of hypocrites,” said Hoeneß Rettig, who had sharply criticized the human rights situation in the World Cup host country. FC Bayern has also been flying to the emirate for years in preparation for the winter. “With this policy of turning a blind eye, we are where we are,” he said, referring to Bayern Munich. He even called Hoeneß an “ambassador of Qatar”.

Hoeneß, on the other hand, argued that the working conditions for WM workers in Qatar, for example, were getting better and not worse. You have to accept that and “not constantly hit people”.

FC Bayern commitment controversial among fans

The cooperation with Qatar – FC Bayern is not there for the winter preparations, but also as an advertising partner – has long divided Bayern fans. It only had one in July “Round table” between club representatives, the Qatari ambassador and critical Bayern supporters given.

In the end, however, there were no concrete results. After that, fan representatives tended to be disappointed with the club.
