The nitrous oxide ban will come into force on 1 January 2023. From that date, nitrous oxide will be on list II of the Opium Act, which means that it will then be prohibited, among other things, to bring, sell or possess nitrous oxide inside or outside the territory of the Netherlands. The purpose of the ban is to reduce recreational use and limit the supply. The professional use of laughing gas for medical and technical purposes remains permitted, as is the use of laughing gas as an additive to foodstuffs.
