The KNMI issued code yellow for strong thunderstorms this morning for the province, but that expectation was later lowered adjusted.

With the expiry of the weather warning, the warning from the Coast Guard also expires. “People are always allowed to decide for themselves whether they want to go to sea, but experience shows that bad weather at sea is more extreme. That is why we warned people to look for a safe haven,” explains a spokesperson for the Coast Guard.

There is no longer a warning for water sports enthusiasts. “It is people’s own responsibility whether they go to sea. They can judge that for themselves.”

It is currently busy on the Wadden Sea due to the 24-hour sailing race that will be held this weekend. More than four hundred cabin sailboats participate in the event, sailing as many miles as possible within 24 hours.

The race starts tomorrow on the IJsselmeer, Markermeer, Waddenzee and North Sea, but many sailors have already taken to the water today. It is not clear how many of them have actually sought a safe haven.
