Back to the glory days of Ajax with Heinz Stuy: “I immediately feel 10 years younger”

It is fifty years ago this year that Ajax won everything there was to win in one season: the competition, the KNVB Cup, the European Cup, the World Cup and the European Super Cup. To commemorate that legendary season, a photo exhibition has been set up on the Museumplein in Amsterdam. Goalkeeper Heinz Stuy (77) came to watch: “I immediately feel like kicking a ball again.”

In the middle of the room, behind a gate, is the original European Cup I, which was held up by Ajax after the final against Inter. Under the bar, keeper Heinz Stuy said: “When I look at those photos, I immediately feel ten years younger and I actually feel like kicking a ball again. But that is not possible. I am now 77 years old and I am already happy that I can still walk,” he says.

Stuy kept his goal clean three European Cup I finals in a row and is the Ajax keeper who has not conceded any goals for the longest time. “1082 Minutes I kept the zero.” Will Pasveer equal that record? “Well, if the defense doesn’t play like they did against Liverpool, I can see it happening,” Stuy said.

Tears

The photos show the smiling faces of Johan Cruijff and Wim Suurbier, among others. “It is of course a nice fact, but it also makes me a bit sad,” says Stuy. “Many photos show players who have already died. And then I get a bit of tears in my eyes.”

The exhibition is on display until September 18.
