AZ can join or drop out against PSV for the winter break: “Close with dignity”

AZ will compete with the ‘best football team in the Netherlands’ tomorrow evening. That is what trainer Pascal Jansen says for the duel with PSV. “They have different qualities. With the ball, without the ball and mentally they are in excellent shape,” says Jansen about the upcoming opponent.

The people of Eindhoven won in a direct duel for Ajax’s lead last weekend (1-2). Jansen praises the attitude that Ruud van Nistelrooij’s team showed. The two still know each other from their joint period in Eindhoven. “It is extremely impressive what he is doing,” says Jansen, who worked at PSV for five years.

The form of the Alkmaarders, on the other hand, has been hard to find in recent weeks. The team lost 3-1 to RKC Waalwijk last weekend. This was partly due to a blundering Hobie Verhulst. The goalkeeper remains the undisputed number one at AZ. The gap with leader PSV is now four points. “Now it’s about closing the first half of the season in a dignified way.”

World Cup selection

There are no AZ players in the 26-man selection. Bruno Martins Indi has already been sidelined due to an injury. Jordy Clasie was in the preselection, but eventually dropped out. “He is not completely top fit”, Jansen explained the absence of the Haarlemmer. “A fit Jordy Clasie one hundred percent”, says Jansen when asked if he would take him to the World Cup.

The match between PSV and AZ starts on Saturday at 9 p.m. in the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven. Hakon Evjen will return to the selection for the Alkmaarders. The winger could play for half an hour. The race comes too early for Zinho Vanheusden and Bruno Martins Indi.
