Last year the mutual match was played in the eighth finals. After regular playing time the score was 2-2. AZ took the lead in extra time thanks to Myron van Brederode, but the amateurs managed to make it 3-3 again in the second half of that extra time, after which the penalty shootout was necessary.
Giant slayer
Quick Boys has already eliminated three Premier League clubs this season: Almere City FC (3-0), Fortuna Sittard (3-1) and SC Heerenveen (3-2 after extra time). The amateurs are at the top of the second division in the competition. In the previous rounds, AZ won in their own stadium against FC Groningen (3-1) and Ajax (2-0).
The quarter-finals will be played on February 4, 5 and 6. On which day and at what time AZ will take action will be announced later.
Last year, AZ failed in the quarter-final against future cup winner Feyenoord (2-0). The last time the Alkmaar club won the KNVB Cup was in 2013 when PSV was defeated 2-1 in De Kuip.
