Ayrton Senna’s death is one of the lowest points in the history of Formula 1. Many fans regularly make pilgrimages to his memorial. However, around Christmas it fell victim to vandalism.
There has been a memorial to Ayrton Senna in the Italian town of Imola since 1997. The Brazilian Formula 1 driver died in an accident at the 1994 Imola Grand Prix. The three-time world champion is one of the biggest icons in sport. The artist Stefano Pierotti created a sculpture in Senna’s honor that can be seen in the “Parco delle Acque Minerali”, a city park. Next to the monument there is also a fence to which fans and visitors repeatedly attach flags and posters in memory of the Brazilian who died early.
However, around Christmas 2024, this same memorial fell victim to a vandalistic attack. As reported by the Italian media “Il Resto del Carlino”, among others, unknown persons burned several flags and memorabilia that were attached to the fence. At least Senna’s sculpture remained undamaged.
This happened twice, reported “Il Resto del Carlino”. Firefighters had to put out a fire both a few days before Christmas Eve and on December 25th.
The city administration was shocked and condemned the attack on the memorial. “These items represent a significant heritage for the city and symbolize the love, affection and appreciation with which the champion is remembered, a figure with whom the city is deeply and emotionally connected,” it said in a statement.
Vandalism has been a problem in Imola for some time. The main suspects are drunk young people who cause damage at night. A ban on alcohol and glass bottles in parks is currently being discussed.
