Tragic accident in Turkey: an avalanche hits some members of the national youth judo team. There is also one fatality.
An avalanche accident in Turkey claimed the life of a 16-year-old member of the Turkish youth national judo team on Saturday. Four other team members were injured, the Ministry of Health said. The incident occurred in the winter sports area of Mount Palandöken in Erzurum province in the east of the country.
The teenager was taken to hospital after the accident, where he later died from his injuries, state broadcaster TRT reported. According to the Ministry of Health, the four injured people are in a stable condition and their lives are not in danger.
The region’s governor, Mustafa Ciftci, said a total of 15 members of the youth team were traveling in the area on Saturday morning when the avalanche occurred.
The Palandöken, a 3,271 meter high mountain, is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Footage from broadcaster TRT shows the moment the avalanche was triggered at high altitude.
