Australian Open, day 10: Gauff after a show of strength in the semi-finals

US Open-Winner Coco Gauff reached the semi-finals after a show of strength over three hours Australian Open reached.

The 19-year-old American defeated the unseeded Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk 7:6 (8:6), 6:7 (3:7), 6:2 on Tuesday (January 23, 2024) and celebrated her twelfth victory at a Grand Slamtournament in a row.

“I am very happy and proud of my fighting spirit today”said Gauff, who made it to the semi-finals for the first time Melbourne and was able to furiously turn around a 1:5 deficit in the first round to win the set.

In impressive shape

In the semi-finals there could now be a new edition of the US Open final against defending champion Aryna Sabalenka; the Belarusian will face world number eleven Barbora Krejcikova from the Czech Republic in the evening. Gauff has been in impressive shape so far in 2024; at the start of the year, the fourth in the world rankings had her title at the WTA tournament Auckland convincingly defended.

Krawietz and Siegemund eliminated

The two remaining Germans were eliminated from the mixed doubles. Kevin Krawietz, alongside his partner Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the USA, failed against the duo Hsieh Su-Wei/Jan Zielinski (Taiwan/Poland) with 2:6 and 3:6. Laura Siegemund and Sander Gille (Belgium) lost 5:7 and 5:7 against Jaimee Fourlis/Andrew Harris (Australia).
