After ten wins in ten finals, Novak Djokovic’s proud streak has come to an end. The Serb lost his eleventh Australian Open final against Carlos Alcaraz.
The 22-year-old Spaniard won 2:6, 6:2, 6:3 and 7:5. Thanks to the victory on Sunday (February 1, 2026), he now has each of the four Grand Slamtournaments won at least one singles title. He had previously won the French Open, US Open and Wimbledon twice.
Alcaraz now has seven Grand Slam titles; for the 38-year-old Djokovic it would have been the 25th.
Djokovic ties up the semi-finals in the first set
In the first set, Djokovic seamlessly continued the great form of the semi-final victory against world number two Jannik Sinner. He only made four slight errors, used two of four break points and won the set 6:2 in 33 minutes.
The second round lasted three minutes longer and ended with the same result, but this time Alcaraz was the better player.
Alcaraz complains about the roof
However, the Spaniard was not entirely satisfied. However, that had to do with the almost closed roof, which bothered him. Although it was significantly cooler in Melbourne than in the past few days at less than 20 degrees Celsius, there was no rain forecast. Alcaraz is considered a professional who prefers playing outside rather than indoors.
Djokovic is getting tired
The 38-year-old Serb then had to pay tribute to the hard and long fight against Sinner. Already in the third set he was clearly tired. He now made a lot more mistakes. Alcaraz was fresher, hit a lot of shots with which Djokovic wanted to force a quick point, and won the round 6:3.
Good chance to break
Djokovic put everything into his first service game of the fourth set. He cheered loudly and pushed the audience Rod Laver Arenaafter he had maintained his service with a lot of effort.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, initially only gave up a maximum of one point in his service games in the fourth set. But then Djokovic had break points at 4:4 and a good chance to use the second one. But he failed.
After three hours and four minutes he lost a final in Melbourne for the first time.
