CHIN UP BUTTERCUP: Release date and the story of the album

The European tour follows concert dates in Canada and the United States – and a new album, which will be released on November 14, 2025. The title of Katie Austra Stelmanis’ new record: CHIN UP BUTTERCUP.

The basis for writing the record – the first release from Stelmanis’ alter ego since 2020 – is a painful breakup that Stelmanis experienced at the beginning of 2020. “I was completely blindsided…The person I loved woke up one day, told me she wasn’t happy, and I basically never saw her again,” Stelmanis said, according to the press release.

The name of the album is an allusion to the social pressure to just put on a smile and carry on, according to the further explanation. The musician further describes CHIN UP BUTTERCUP as a story about “the alienating feeling of being heartbroken in a world where your own pain is uncomfortable and unwanted.”

Stelmanis and co-producer Kieran Adams were inspired by the Eurodance sound and Madonna’s 1998 album RAY OF LIGHT when recording this fifth Austra LP. Ultimately, the record should exude a positive vibe.

An album preview thanks to “Siren Song”

The single “Siren Song” was already released on October 7th. The track, co-written with Montreal songwriter, musician and DJ Patrick Holland, is her way of making a plea for connection.

The song exists “somewhere at the intersection of Abba, Ray of Light, The X-Files and Greek mythology,” Austra continued in the press release. “Abba inspired the early songwriting with Patrick. The siren introduced himself to me while I was improvising the demo recordings, and I quickly realized that Orpheus would be our mutual nemesis. After a recent X-Files binge, I was greatly inspired by Mulder’s desperate search for his sister,” said the artist. And: “Ray of Light came at the end when my co-producer Kieran Adams and I created the sound world that would serve as the background for our siren to mourn the loss of her lover to Orpheus and his annoying lyre.”
