Audi builds for Formula 1 project

Audi is pushing ahead with its plans for entering Formula 1 in 2026. The Volkswagen subsidiary is expanding its motorsport center at the Neuburg an der Donau site.

In a new building measuring around 3000 square meters, new test benches for the development of the drive unit are to be installed, as the German carmaker announced on Friday. The construction work for the extension started this week.

In the future, Audi will work together with Sauber in Formula 1 and will start as a works team in the premier motorsport class from 2026. The drive unit is developed in Neuburg. The new building is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2024. Around 220 people are currently working on Audi’s Formula 1 project. The goal is more than 300 employees by mid-2023.

“The expansion creates the long-term infrastructure required for the development of our F1 power unit. With the expansion of the building and the installation of state-of-the-art test benches, we are giving our development team the best possible conditions to be successful in the premier class of motorsport,” said Chief Technology Officer Oliver Hoffmann.
