Attacker Cody Gakpo exchanges PSV for Liverpool FC

Footballer Cody Gakpo transfers from PSV to the English club Liverpool FC. The two clubs have reached an agreement on a transfer from the Oranje-international. The Eindhoven club has that on Monday evening confirmed.

The 23-year-old attacker impressed at the World Cup in Qatar, where he scored three goals for the Orange squad. PSV reports that he will immediately leave for England to “undergo the necessary formalities for completing the transfer.”

The transfer fee has not been disclosed. “But this is a record transfer for PSV,” said general manager Marcel Brands. According to British media, the amount is between 40 and 50 million euros, Reuters news agency reports.

Medical test

According to the ANP, the PSV management completed the transfer on Boxing Day and the club gave Gakpo permission to travel to England, including for a medical examination. Liverpool would pay around 42 million euros for the attacker. That amount could rise to more than 55 million euros. Liverpool have not yet confirmed Gakpo’s arrival.

Gakpo played his last game for PSV against AZ (0-1) on November 12. The native of Eindhoven, educated at Jong PSV, made his debut on February 25, 2018 as a substitute in an away match against Feyenoord. In the 2018-2019 season, he made sixteen appearances in the first team, usually as a substitute. Gakpo has now played 106 Eredivisie matches, in which he scored 36 times. With nine goals, he is now the top scorer in the Eredivisie.
